2) What Do the Different Types of Vehicle Title Mean?
There are several types of vehicle title that you will see in our car listings.
These labels are often called title brands. They each make reference to the condition
and history of the car. They include:
Clean Title
Also known as Normal Title, This is a vehicle that has not been damaged seriously and has no
current liens on its title (i.e., any prior financing has been paid). This is generally the
most desirable type of car because it does not require extensive repairs and is most likely
in working order. However this vehicles are also the most expensive.
Salvage/Rebuildable Title
Many of our vehicles have salvage titles, and can represent one of the best values
in car buying today. Salvage title cars have been damaged to beyond 75% of the vehicles
original value, as determined by an insurance company. These are generally vehicles that have
been written off by insurance companies as total losses or totaled, because,
to the insurance company, that option is cheaper than the expense of repairing the vehicle,
paying the owner for rental cars during repairs, etc. Some states use the title brand
Total Loss to reflect the insurance companys analysis of the vehicles condition. In most cases,
a vehicle with a salvage title can still be repaired and made roadworthy. But, due to insurance
laws in America, the vehicle would never again be eligible for Clear Title in the United States.
As a result, salvage titles can drastically lower the price of a vehicle,
regardless of make, model, year, or repairability.
3) Why Are Some of These Vehicles in Such Good Condition?
Rebuilt Title
Also known as ?Rebuilt Salvage, or Prior Salvage. When a salvage vehicle has been successfully
repaired, typically to fully operational, they receive this title brand. Some states in the
US do not differentiate between salvage and rebuilt titles. For those states that do issue these titles,
an extensive inspection is conducted to ensure that the vehicle is safe and can be allowed to
return to the road. Many of these vehicles are in near original condition, making it possible for you
to drive immediately with no additional repair expense. It is just like buying a used car,
but thanks to technicalities of American insurance law, you can get the vehicle at a
fraction of the cost of a comparable vehicle.
Flood
Some states specify flood damage in the title brand to make it possible for potential buyers
to better analyze the cause of a vehicle?s salvage condition. This is done because flood damage
is often difficult to discern from the outside of a vehicle or in photos, and keeps other car sellers
from misrepresenting the condition of the vehicle. Flood Titles are often considered as variants to
salvage titles, but other states treat them as Dismantled Titles. Some variations on this title include
Previous Flood, Dismantled Flood, and Totaled Flood, among others. These vehicles are often quite easy
to repair and the body can be in excellent condition. Most flood vehicles come from areas that had major
rain fall or severe weather conditions. These vehicles typically get flooded because they were driven
threw a flooded street, or parked in a parking lot that was flooded with a few inches of rain,
a lot of times the vehicles may have been at a major dealership?s sale lot when the flooding occurred.
The flood brand will cause a great reduction in price, making these vehicles
much more affordable for the savvy buyer!
4) What is a Theft Recovery Vehicle
If a vehicle has been stolen, and it is not recovered within three weeks to 30 days,
most insurance companies will pay based on their policy, and the vehicle is considered a
total loss. If the vehicle is later recovered, it is usually branded with a salvage title,
even though it may be in perfect condition or have only minor damage such as a missing stereo.
This creates an excellent opportunity to purchase a vehicle in near perfect condition for a
tiny fraction of the cost of a comparable vehicle with a Clear Title.
